Day 1 — Woodford Reserve & Castle & Key
Morning: Start with the classic. Woodford Reserve’s National Historic Landmark distillery is about 14 minutes from downtown Versailles, through some of the prettiest horse-farm country in America. Book the first tour of the day — the limestone distillery is at its best before the buses arrive.
Afternoon: Castle & Key, built in the restored Old Taylor castle, is roughly 20 minutes away on McCracken Pike (the two distilleries are practically neighbors). Reserve tastings ahead; both sell out on weekends.
Evening: Walk to dinner and a bourbon bar in downtown Versailles. No driving, no designated-driver negotiations — that’s the point of the home base.
Day 2 — Buffalo Trace & Frankfort
Morning: Buffalo Trace in Frankfort — one of America’s oldest continuously operating distilleries — is about an 18-minute drive. Tours are free but reservations go fast; book weeks ahead.
Afternoon: Explore Frankfort’s riverfront and the Capitol, or add a second tasting. Back in Versailles by late afternoon with your haul — every suite at The Woodford has a full kitchen and room to actually enjoy the bottles you’re collecting.
Day 3 — Horses in the morning, bourbon in the afternoon
Morning: Keeneland is 8 minutes east — watch dawn workouts from the rail (free, most mornings), or catch a race day if your trip lands in April or October. This is the one itinerary where the Bourbon Trail and the racetrack share a home base.
Afternoon: Head to Lawrenceburg for Four Roses and Wild Turkey, 20–25 minutes south, with Wild Turkey’s visitor center overlooking the Kentucky River palisades. Fly out of Blue Grass Airport — just 8 minutes from the hotel — or stay one more night; nobody regrets it.

If you only have a weekend, compress into one Saturday of distilleries: morning at Woodford Reserve, afternoon at Castle & Key or Buffalo Trace, then a Sunday brunch and a Thoroughbred-farm drive before heading home. You’ll miss Wild Turkey and Four Roses, but you’ll see the big three most first-timers came for — still from a single base in Versailles.
Kentucky Bourbon Trail 4-day itinerary
Add a fourth day for the eastern loop: Wild Turkey in Lawrenceburg (about 20 minutes south), Four Roses just past it, and a long lunch in downtown Frankfort. Four days also opens up a Keeneland race afternoon (April or October) or a Thoroughbred farm tour without cutting into distillery time.
